Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment after his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There's no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
